Deployed Mom Surprises Son At School After 10 Months Apart

For the past ten months, one Florida mom in the United States Navy has been dreaming of the moment she would get to see her son again after being deployed to West Africa.

So when Chasmine Banks, Petty Officer 3rd Class, found out she was finally coming home to Lynn Haven, Florida, after almost a year apart from family and friends, she knew she had to do something special for her son, 11-year-old Gabriel, since he had no idea when she was returning.

“I’ve been gone for almost a year, so I went on a deployment in 2013 and ’14 and I was going to surprise my son then, but my mom passed away and I ended up coming home early, so he knew I was coming home,” Banks explained. “So, this is to make up for it.”

With the help of Gabriel’s teachers and principal, Banks planned to surprise him in the middle of one of his classes. “Well, I’m shaking. Like, I haven’t seen him in seven months, so February 6th was the last time I saw my son, and apparently he’s grown a lot since I left,” Banks said moments before being reunited with her son.

When Banks walked through the door into Gabriel’s classroom, he instantly jumped out of his seat, ran to her, and jumped into her arms. “He’s my life. He’s my world. I do this for him. This is why I’m in this uniform,” Banks said.
